DS2 going for ADOS at end of the month. Has anyone been thru this recently? We have been on a list for so long that i have forgotten what it involves

DS2 had his in 2008, so not recently, but enough to remember it.

SALT, EP and PAed were all there, although might be different people for you. SALT and EP both took turns on trying to play with DS2, mostly role playing like feeding the doll, imaginary tea party and also cause and effect like letting a balloon go. They did an empathy bit with poor dolly as well.

It was filmed and Paed also took notes.

DS2 tried to escape out of the (2nd floor) windows most of the time, was totally not co-operating

Yes, we finally had ours last week.

DS was cheesed off about yet another assessment/visit to hospital, so we bribed him with a trip to a toy shop if he would 'play nicely and answer the doctor's questions'. I don't think it altered who he is, just persuaded him to go along with it.

One dr filmed and the other one played with him.

She gave him a puzzle to do.

Chatted to him about her pets.

Gave him some little figures to play with and tried to get him to engage in her story.

Gave him a tractor and then tried (and failed) to distract his attention from it.

Asked him to narrate what was going on in a picture book.
Tried to get him to play with a pink dolly (he was most insulted!)
There was other stuff but I can't remember it all. I got the impression that there are several versions and each version has multiple options.

I'm not sure when we'll get any feedback from it. His responses all made sense to me, but I can see that the doctors will mark him up as not normal.

ours was done at home by the specialist SALT, but they knew us from dd1 and also they had seen dd2 six months earlier and already knew that she was likely autistic, but just needed it tied together.

I wanted her to have a bad day, and she did. She did her ASD stuff, and the salt wasnt fooled by her scripted play.

I hope all went ok today, I did exactly the same thing, wishing for bad days but it always seemed like doctors didnt believe what I was saying or could see just how bad dd2 was. Thought i was going mad sometimes! turns out I was right and it wasnt just in my head, thank god.

I think it went ok. Didn't get much feedback as they score him and then our caseworker calls us back...is that the norm? Or just stringing it out even longer??
He said he had to play but he wanted to play with other things and they made him do tasks. He has a crappy short term memory so it will come out in a few days!

I feel really frazzled and brain melty tho.

we had to wait too, they will got through things the case worker and look at his or her notes from past meetings etc and come to a conclusion, doesnt take too long or at least it didnt for us.
Im sure once the results come back you will feel much better whatever the outcome but either way im sure you will be ok. Hope you have a supporting family and partner to talk things through with, always helps to talk.

Sounds like you are going through such a bad time, i do hope you have someone to talk to if not i am always here
I got divorced last year after feeling like he never understood how i was feeling about not just our daugter but everything else in life but I suppose this happens to lots of people.

there are lots of suuport groups around also, i found mine through the hospital, people who are going through what you are and can advise you on various things not just autism. I always found it better than a doctor who pretended to understand even they had never gone thorugh the same things.

We don't have access to anything like that because he isn't formally diagnosed and i have other children that are excluded or it's during the day when he is at school. His paediatrician isn't supportive of me contacting camhs either.

I wouldnt have thought camhs would help as this is for mental health. the nas hold seminars all over the country at weekends and evenings which will accept all the family and will talk to your other children about how they are feeling. They also go through with your husband and yourself about what you can do to help and what signs to look out ofr. They will happily welcome families who havent yet has a diagnosis and are just looking for answers.

How are you feeling today anyway? It must be hard especially not having a supporting husband or partner.

My son had an ADOS in July. It was done by a nurse and SALT. The report came at the end of SEPT. There were no scores in the report and a conclusion of "autistic traits" but no formal diagnosis. Is this standard?

Don't know I'm afraid. Was it filmed? Ours was two doctors. We went in for a talk with the consultant re findings. A few months prior to Ados there was an interview and less structured play session.
It's probably different in different areas.

WE have had different kinds of meetings while they decided whether or not we needed the ADOS. It was with a SALT and a nurse and the SALT did say when she brought DS2 back out that it would take around 2 weeks ish.

Am feeling pretty shite, life is not great at the moment anyway but waiting to hear about this feels like i am holding my breath.

If there is anything you need to talk about, I am always here, I know life in general can be difficult especially if you are not getting the support from friends and family. Remember to always have time for yourself. Do you go out much to just be yourself? I always find it helps to just be a person not a mum, wife, daughter etc

Maybe you should talk to someone then you wouldnt be on sites like this talking about self harming, getting divorced and numerous other problems you apparently have. Just an idea

I don't know how to take that. It's hard to tell whether the sarcasm is intended or if that is just how i read it.
