has anyone tried to teach their dc to tie up laces? Thought we'd give it a go with ds2 (15) but it seems there are 2 methods

I was taught make one loop and bring the lace around and through a loop
dh was taught make 2 loops and cross them over and through just like the first part of the bow

Is there a third method that is any easier for SN children?

He's had velcro shoes for years and it gets harder to find them in bigger sizes. Before anyone suggests slip ons, I hate slip - ons (they shout fake tan /meddalion wearing/ David Dickenson types - I know its a huge generalisation but one entrenched since childhood that I can't get over)

We have these which are really effective. Prior to this I used black elastic that I'd tie in a double bow and ds would then slip the shoes on anyway.

Watching with interest as DS2 starts secondary and I can't find any Velcro football boots! Maybe the springy ones? Thanks insanity.

It was ds starting secondary that prompted me to look too Ellen although his TA's have helped discretely on occasion as well.

insanityscatching thanks for this. Looks promising but can't work out if you need to do a bow. Are the laces left undone?

Haven't seen or tried these www.greeper.com/index.php but came across them whilst looking for something else a couple of months ago. More expensive than the ones insanity has linked to, but these are designed for sportswear as well as SN so might be better for the football boots.

The springy ones are elastic and just get pulled tight, they stay tight and don't get tied in a bow, and look quite cool! I had some red ones as a child, just for fun and had forgotten about them.

Bigbluebus, your ones look more like normal laces, but a bit more fiddley, maybe. It's a toss up between looking NT but possibly a bit tricky and easier to do up but potentially getting teased? Hmm, I'll have to think about it.

Thanks for the suggestions. Went to the shoe shop today and ds2 tried on 2 pairs of lace ups. The verdict on the first pair was that they made his feet sleepy and the second pair made his feet feel too strong!

He wanted to have laces but when it came down to it, he preferred the two strap velcro model we've been buying since he started school 10 years ago. Had to pay £57! Shop said that not many companies made school shoes in velcro for his size (7G) and that this was a specialist brand. (Ricosta??) Looked on Amazon and they are only £1 cheaper but still think its a rip off

DS2 now has Velcro school shoes (only a 3F at 11yo) and Velcro trainers but I couldn't find Velcro football boots so I've ordered some springy laces. I'm not looking forward to £57 shoes in the future, though, eatyourveg! I like the sleepy and strong comments!

What does he wear out of school? Could you get some lace up trainers to wear at home so he gets confident tying laces when you are around to offer help? Or is that just not cool?

My son is a size 11 (adult) and a size 12 for shoes that fit his splints. We get them from soccer world where Fila, Londsdale and a few others so velcro in the biggest sizes...and only cost £18..

We have given up on laces:(

i dont know of any way physically to get that sort of knot without using those two methods if it helps i wasnt able to tie my shoes tell i was 10

Got them from Amazon - they were £5.75 so quite expensive I suppose but free delivery and they are brilliant, really easy to use and look quite cool!

I know its a bit late now but found these on the soccer sports website, you should be able to get away with them for school.

Thanks for that. his school demand a pair of "outdoor shoes" for the playground and these seem ideal. Had no intention of spending another £50+!

my dd is 10 and she wont even entertain laces, luckly so far iv managed to find things to fit that either have the elastic or velco apart from the little prob iv got at the mo which is she lives in her crocs she refuses to ware anything else baring them, no matter what the wether they are on her feet, not sure how im going to get round that 1 come winter tho.

Well, the springy laces arrived today and work on his football boots. A bugger to put on initially but easy to get his foot into. I think those locking laces look really good, might have got those if I'd seen the link first. I'll bookmark it.

Going to get the locking laces for trainers as the velcro look on trainers is really not a good one in an adult size 7. thanks for all the suggestions

Just to say thanks for the links, INSANITY and SUBURBAN, as I too am having difficulty with finding size 7 shoes with velcro for my 11 yr old ds with AS. Will order one of each kind I think. Cheers!
