Can someone talk me through statementing... how, when, who etc?

so my mum went to meet DS's year 3 teacher for an end of year IEP summary. Teacher said he needs referring back to the therapy centre as his writing has not improved even with all the SA+ help they've given him (he's dyspraxic)

Is it worth thinking about statementing? does he have to be very disabled, or is the fact that his teacher has said he needs something over and above what they can do in school enough?

I am clueless... can someone tell me the rules / procedures behind it all? google is confusing me...

hi also try looking at www.mencap.org.uk tells you all about it on there ,

have a look at the ipsea site, loads of useful info there and a good explanation of what you need to think about, do and timescales.

if school are saying they can't meet his needs and he's making no progress on sa+ then it's definitely worth thinking about statutory assessment, that's the criteria, not level of disability. You may well be told that your ds won't get a statement by school or other professionals, don't let this put you off as I think a lot of statemented dcs on this board have been told they won't get one at some point or other. Have you been in touch with your local parent partnership? They should be able to offer information and support.

ive been told it can take up to 3 months so the sooner the better , my son as been refferd by his school 3 weeks ago i also wrote to them as i was told this may speed it up ,, Good luck .

it takes nearly 6 months im afraid they have a time table to stick to and they do , hopefully you may get what you want and need for your dc as if not then there is trib , but good luck we all need it on this road thats deffinate
