Hi, We were refused SA for my 10 year old son, after the disappointed we decided to appeal and got a date for the Tribunal in November. However today after casually speaking to the LEA EP regarding a visit to my son's school, she told me that she attended a meeting on Monday to discuss my son and now he has been accepted for SA and I should be receiving a letter in due course to confirm this.
Can anyone tell me who's been through this process, what happens next and what I should be expecting, time wise etc as in 2 weeks my son finishes for the summer holidays, so guessing everything will start to happen in the new school year.

Excellent news, my LEA EP also got my tribunal stopped and the SA proess started. Took 12 weeks for LEA to gather all the evidence from all the professionals involved, they go to Panel and decided YES my son would have a statement. Got the draft statement about a week or so later, just made a few changes a week ago and sent it back and awaiting its return. Im guessing it will take longer (if its allowed too legally) because of the summer holidays, getting evidence from the school would be difficult and lots of paeds go on holiday during july/august.

Hi Brandy77, yes it is excellent news and a complete shock, as I am currently in the process of gathering evidence in preparation for the tribunal, also I was about to employ a private EP to assess to help with my case. So I guess I can put that on hold for now. So in this 12 week period, assuming after the holidays now, do they see my son again for more tests or is it all judged on past and present assessments etc. My son has been seen by EP, local Paed and SLT services, do any other professionals get involved in this process.

My DS was seen again by the EP who did some more detailed assessments of his ability profile using WISC (I think?) She also observed him again at school. We had to see an LA Paed, had more SALT reports and both his schools reported on him. (He was in the middle of transitioning from his special school to MS reception) His own paed also wrote another report. We had to write our own parental contribution, the LA provided a 2 page form. We used the headings and wrote about 9 pages including photographs. Always a balance between including all the necessary detail and not overloading them with info they then just skim!

mine was quicker than the 12 weeks as they had already been gathering evidence so this part was very quick (couple of weeks) but in the end as we were ahead they strung it out a bit to make it the exact length of time they were allowed, but thats brilliant news the only two things extra we had to do was see camhs and and extra appointment with their EP , good luck

my son had to do everything that ellenjanes son did, the WISC with the EP, paed apt to diagnose him, reports gathered from his paeds in london, my very very long report! his fathers half a page report , speech assessment isnt till the end of this month but he got the statement without it

Hi brandy77, my son has no official DX would this affect the whole process, the SA in our case is because my son is so far behind his peers we need to know why and have the correct provisions in place, more 1to1 which is currently 2x10mins a week that's if the TA is not busy with other duties.

no it wont affect getting a statement with not having a diagnosis, its based on the childs needs not on their diagnosis. I have a very supportive EP and it was only when she got in involved in February that she really got the ball rolling and things finally started moving forward, hopefully it will be the same for you
