Help ladies. Bear with me. I know it's off-topic. I'm a regular poster and I'm urgently trying to finish a paper and I can't work out how to do the page numbers.

I have a contents and title page and need them to start at the text after but I can't seem to make it do it. I have tried section breaks and header and footer but the numbers still keep appearing on the pages before the text starts too.....aaargghh

Which version of Word?
Not sure exactly what you need...

If you're printing it out the easiest way is to do a separate document for your cover/contents page and have the text section as a new document starting as page one then combine them after printing. There should be an advanced setting when you go to insert page numbers that would allow you to choose the page you want to start your numbers on but I don't have my computer here so I can't check sorry :(
