11yr old child with dyslexia / dyscalculia

Looking for a good UK school for my two boys. The younger one is 9 and has some suspected dyslexia but we really need a lot of help for my older son.

There are three main cognitive subtypes of Developmental Dyslexia: auditory, visual, and attentional. So an auditory processing disorder (listening disability), a visual processing disorder, an attention disorder, or some combination of the three. Each cognitive subtypes can cause different information processing problems and require different types of support and coping strategies to work around the issues.

Sarah - where do you want the school?

There are several schools specifically for dyslexic children. If you google dyslexia schools you will find loads of adds. They tend to be around £7k a term.

Or do you want an independent school that is good for children with dyslexia? This is a bit harder to find - although yesterday I had this one recommended to me. It calls itself 'proudly non-selective' which sounds good. (Most independent schools are selective to some extent and won't want your children.)

Or do you want a state school? That is even harder. You might be able to find one with a SpLD unit (Specific Learning Disability as it is often called here) - but you might not be able to get into a unit without a statement.....

State schools vary (as I guess independent do). They all try to be inclusive. Some of them are better at that than others.....

Our boy went to Mark College which is a Beacon school for dyslexia and other SpLD. The fees were high as he had to board, but it was all paid by the LEA as it was the only school which could help him. He did GCSEs there and has done extremely well, but decided to return to a local college for A-levels.
