Hi all i have posted a couple of times , have almost 3 year old DD who is likely ASD , Speech and Laungage problems and has Paediatrician and Occupational therapist appointments coming up . Found out from Nursery this morning that 1 to 1 has been refused and have to submit more evidence . Is this normal ? Is it likely to be refused again ? I also took in forms to show them for Statutory Assessment for Statement should i push for this to be done ?

Have they given a reason for why its been refussed?, what evedence are they after? we managed to get 1:1 for dd2 at nuresry (1 hour a day) and her portage worker.

Hi Marne thanks for answering , Nursery just said not enough evidence . Portage has been recommended for her but only just in last week .

Could you speak to them and ask them specifically what evidence they are looking for? Is there a senco for the nursery? (sorry, I'm not sure how the nursery is set up - I know primary schools do, I'm assuming nursery does, but not sure obviously) Maybe the senco could give you some idea what's needed? "Needs more evidence" seems more leaning towards "we can get it but we need something more concrete to go on" as far as why she needs the 1:1. Are the paed and OT and possibly portage worker able to assist with that?

Are th nursery supporting thet she needs 1:1? you could ask your gp to write a letter and deffently ask paed and OT when you see them, i think it was easier for us as dd2 already had a dx of ASD by the time we asked for 1:1 and we had back up from SALT and loccal paed, portage were a great help and sorted everything out for us. We did'nt apply for a statement until 6 months before she started school as we felt she did'nt need one for nursery as we were happy with 1 hour a day 1:1 and she was also attending a sn nursey 2 days a week where she was getting OT and SALT. I think it depends how helpful the nursery are, if they are not offering the right support for her then push for a statement and deffently make sure you have one in place before she starts school.

Hi Triggles am going to speak to senco for Nursery when go back to pick her up . She is quite limited in her knowledge though and has only once before in 10 years of doing nursery has applied for 1 to 1 . Paed and OT appointments coming up are her first visit so guess will have to wait until see them ? Portage has been suggested by EYST so will most likely need to chase this with nursery too .
Hi Marne i think nursery do their best but could do better . SALT backed up referral to CDT , am sure i will have to push nursery to sort Portage out . DD goes 2 days to Nursery and and has made progress there . My worry is that the 1 to 1 gets refused again and from my understanding if you get a statement you are more likely to get 1 to 1 funding . I may be totally wrong .

Wow. Only applied for it once in ten years? I'm surprised. I also would think that there are places/people within the LEA that she could get assistance from in doing that. Hmm Perhaps asking another senco?

StarlightMcKenzie · 16/05/2011 11:31

okay, so ask them what evidence they do need. Ask them to justify their decision. Ask for this information in writing, - put the request in writing yourself.

Don't panic. Be systematic and reasonable.

StarlightMcKenzie · 16/05/2011 11:32

sorry, don't speak to the SENCO, hand her a letter with your questions. It is much more effective and less likely to get you fobbed off.

Triggles · 16/05/2011 12:05

That's true. Putting things in writing always gets better results as they know you're getting "official" in your complaints and lining things up to go up the chain.

Thanks everyone after further conversation apparently DD will get funding , i think they did not make things clear enough :) Have said get the ball rolling with Portage too . Thanks so much everyone . This time next week we will know CDT appointments . x
