SN children

Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Can anyone recommend a good car seat for a child with DS?

Hi - my dd has just turned 1 and is still in her original Maxi-Cosi Cabrio car seat. She's relatively small for her age (has been between 8-9 Kg sice Xmas!!) but does have relatively good muscle tone & can sit unaided.

I took her to a car seat specialist a few months back & they advised she stay in her current seat a little longer because of her hypermobility & concerns about moving her to a forward facing seat too soon, but she's now at the stage where her head is reaching the top of the seat.

Does anyone have any suggestions on seats that provide extra support, especially around the neck area? I was thinking about maybe getting one of the Kiddy seats they've got great safety ratings (plus she hates being restrained so this might be easier to get her in)

Thanks!

Hi proudmum74, ds was a titch when he was your dd age (also very low tone and hypermobilty) We had a britax first class which was really supportive. We now have a britax evolva 123 as we needed something to last him till he was older!

Try to keep DD in a rear facing seat as long as possible, now available up to age 4 but quite expensive. DGS has one, low tone and CP and it is comfy and supportive. Its the BSafe Izi Combi and as it can be used up til 4 it is worth the extra outlay here

We have a lrge Britax for DS - it is a "special one" and was rather expensive (£400 ish several years ago), OT helped us find it and also to find funding (local charity).
There is a place in Milton Keynes that has many different car seats and can offer advice - www.incarsafetycentre.co.uk/

Hi sneezecakesmum & starfishmummy - thanks both of you for the advice, I have an appointment with the OT in a few weeks so I'll ask them for help then. We live in Milton Keynes and have heard really good things about this place so will give it a go. Thanks again!
