Weighted Garments?

Hi all,

Can anyone help me with this. Am looking for something which would put weight on DS shoulders when he gets a bit over excited, hand flapping etc.

He is a very complex wee man and although he does have some traits has never been considered for ASD assessment. However he does have sensory issues in addition to his medical needs and other physical disabilites. He does A LOT of hand flapping and rocking and juggling. He has a wobble cushion which helps him to sit in his seat in school ( He's 6yrs old)

I was in class with him today watching him work ( all oparents were invited today) and I'm sure he was a little more excited than usual but when he stared flapping I placed a hand on each of his shoulders and pressed firmly downwards. We do this when he gets a bit overstimnulated an dis running around daft and it's like turning a switch of. He stops immediately!

It worked like that today too, so I was thinking that maybe if he had a something which would give him some weight on his shoulders this would help him to remain grounded and focused in class..............

Any ideas?

Thanks for reading :)

Rompa do weighted vests, shoulder pads lap pads and blankets.HTH.There are other companys but be carfeful i ordered a blanket from a company i found on the internet and it was not good.Really poor quality so had to send it back.Something to bear in mind is that you have to use the right weight. If your dc sees an ot it may be worth asking her about it.

DS has a weighted vest which he wears for school. I just need to nip and get him but I will be back in bit with the link :)

we've recently been recommended a deep pressure vest, it's not wieghted, just tight fitting, bit like this one. Will be a wait though for us as school will hopefully fund but has to get approval etc . . .

Thanks everyone. Will contact OT ( was just recently signed off from her ) and ask what weight she would recommend.

Good advice re not using it all the time. Think I might also try a weighted blanket for night time as he has started waking up and this is new.......

Thakns again everyone, very helpful. xx
