Please help me understand who SALT is meant to help

I posted recently about my ds - see thread below:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/special_needs/1173523-SALT-assessment-for-prob-AS-ds-what-do-you-think

I have now spoken to the therapist who undertook the assessment. She told me it is not her brief to deal with social communication, this is up to schools. The service is for children with language disorders only. They may give advice to schools but do not work directly with children with scd's. I was told to watch the Individual Development Plan dvd for strategies and ideas.

She confirmed this was official local policy when I asked her to repeat this Shock.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Am I being unreasonable if I challenge this officially? I have already challenged her - she told me to take it up with the SENCO and wished me good luck!

I'm afraid many SALTs are of the opinion that they can't help DC with social communication difficulties, but to be honest, who else can help them? It's a cop out! My DSs Salt started DS using pecs to kick start his communication and introduced us to the Hanen approach (great book called More than Words from Wimslow press but expensive). She was lovely but even so stopped working with him age 5.

Ellenjane Thanks for replying. It seems so wrong when some SALTS cop out. I had a long chat with another therapist, and she was so passionate about helping children with asd/scd. She read ds's assessment and described it as written by someone who didn't want to add to her caseload Angry Shock.
