Neo alphasmart crashed ant experience?

My ds's neo alphsmart crashed at school today, losing all his work. I have fiddled with it, reread the manuel front to back, then suddenly it all came back, except the file he was working on at the time. It was just frozen on an empty screen, when I got it back key delay was on maximum 3 secs. Just weird. Is this a fluke or does this kind of thing happen a lot?

Clearly should be any experience, not expecting help from ants Blush what an idiot I am.

Ours crashed completely once. We don't know what DS had done! We had to contact alphasmart people and they gave us some code to reset it back to factory settings. Lost everything on it. But it's never done it again! We've had it for 4 years. How old is yours?

SparkleRainbow · 22/03/2011 18:41

Not sure, we have only had it for a month, on loan from PDSS. Ds swears he didn't do anything Hmm

If it does it again I'd be a bit worried. Will PDSS give you technical support? They should if it's theirs. My DS swore he'd done nothing either. Maybe it overheated from overuse!! Grin

Grin at heating from overuse!

PDSS should provide technical support I guess, just trying to get hold of them might be more of an issue. I will keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen again. Ds did notjing during the lesson after it crashed as the teacher left him (ages 7) to try and sort it out Hmm

TBH he would probably be better at it than she would.

Getting DS to hand write anything is blood from stone. Alphasmart is a little bit better. He'd like it more if it had games on it! Smile He's already found the typing tutor programme.

moosemama · 22/03/2011 21:20

I'm not sure how common it is for them to crash, but apparently ds's crashes every time he uses the spellchecker.

He inherited it from another child in the school whose parents bought him his own upgraded version and it used to do the same to him.

moosemama · 22/03/2011 21:20

Dh thinks its most likely a virtual memory or RAM issue.

Sorry to hijack (slightly)
I am interested in getting an alphasmart for DS to try, but want to check to see if it fits his needs before forking out the cash (I'm a bit of a tightwad!) a loan machine would be great! What is PDSS?
Many Thanks

PDSS is the Physical Disabilities Support Service, which is attached to SEN team at our Local Authority. Do you have any SEN service involvement in supporting your ds?

i dont know the specs but since its just a wordprocessor its likly moosemamma is right and its a ram issue

most likly caused by a failed release command ie ram was alocated to file while it was already alocated to a system function that can cause the type of crash the active data in memory would be lost and a reset required

SparkleRainbow · 25/03/2011 13:26

Maybe that is what I managed to do, reset it......

Thank you everyone. It hasn't happened again........yet!
