OK here goes - DS1 (ASD aged 10) had a speech and language assessment carried out through his mainstream school back in late Oct 10, fast forward to January and still no written report. Chased SENCO at school and was told they would chase up report, waited another couple of weeks spoke to SENCO again they said they have chased up twice and that the headteacher was also going to chase up which apparently they did (we are now talking mid Feb). Anway fast forward to today and fed up with waiting I made a phone call myself to speech and language dept. Spoke to a lady who was most helpful and told me the report was typed up and sent out mid January and that a copy was sent to school at that point. She was most apologetic that I wasnt sent a copy and has said she will send out today (Tues) first class, I have also said to her to send another copy to school which she said she will also do today. One of two things have happened:

a) the school received a copy and have been sitting on it

b) they genuinely didn't receive a copy mid January, however they obviously never bothered to chase it up on the four separate occasions that they said they had, evidenced by the fact that I had no problem whatsoever in obtaining a copy on my first attempt.

Please tell me the best way to proceed with this whilst trying to keep a cool head.

There is also a moral to this story in that if you want something done properly do it yourself! something that keeps coming back and biting me on the rear.

Did the SALT send you a letter confirming the visit to school for assessment? Only I had similar issues with dx report then SALT report and materials not arriving in school. A few tips I picked up during this:

Ring/email the SALT directly, I did for a chat about a few issues...introduced myself and requested that copies of reports be sent to me by email as well as post. (I needed it for IEP meeting and school denied receiving it).

Take extra copies into senco meetings, incase the school has 'lost' them.

Remain friendly with receptionists! Grin

If you really struggle turn up at the office...Im quicker than the postal service! Grin (Did this after waiting weeks for dx report).

Chase things up yourself incase you need to catch them out. Smugly giving a copy over to the senco! Mwahahaha!

Might not mostly have been schools fault, clearly salt or their secretarial staff, if they exist, had a big backlog if it took till jan to get report sorted. Good idea re asking for copy by email.

Time I find that it is best to give everyone your email addrss so that they can email all reports to you directly. Learnt this the hard way when I belatedly noticed that SALT had missed a visit and called her to query why (after a few months). She went through her records and told me that school called her and told her they had enough to get on with and did not have enough staff to see her - this despite my ds having a full-time 1:1. Ds was only having 5 visits a year!

zzzzz what did you do to offent? Perhaps because you took the initiative and showed them to be incompetent. School gets irritated because I always try to have direct contact with the people working with my child and get them to talk to me as well. They would prefer to have everything go through them - I found that out in the minutes of a meeting which I obtained via the Data Protection Act.

yep i always go direct. Even delivered a physio refferal by hand today from GP to ensure it didnt get lost, waiting months ect.
Sad but true, do it yourself, be direct and record everything.
NB: our educational department arent allowed to send reports via email Hmm
