Ds1 starts school in less than 2 weeks. Everyone has been working hard to get everything ready, school, nursery, autism outreach worker, even the SALTS(!!). An important part of the transition is that ds1's nursery key worker accompanies him to school initially. Partly to settle him in, partly to train his LSA and partly to translate. Despite myself and nursery going on about it since July the LEA still haven't managed to agree the 16p per mile travel expenses that the key worker needs. It has been suggested that we submit the request to a committee meeting scheduled to take place AFTER ds1 starts school. We've spent the last week on the phone passed from pillar to post. I have just sent a stinking email to the head of preschool services saying it would be a shame if ds1's school start is delayed due to "administrative complications". I put inefficienceies first but thought it was a bit rude.

It makes me so mad, between us the nursery manager and myself have made eight enquiries about this topic and still nothing happens- really we both have better things to do with our time.

Oh and it's not hard either is it Jimjams, they'll either pay it or not? Very frustrating and maddening. Sympathies.

If the key worker is entitled to the travel expenses and the LEA have agreed that the key worker should be there to aid the transition for your ds, I really don't see what the problem is - I'm sure you don't either - v.frustrating for you.

Sorry, don't know much about SN education but do know that it will cost about 5000 miles worth of 16ps to have a committee make such a small decision. What is wrong with these people? Are they incapable of making decisions without having a huge debate. It's not like you're asking for much. Typical red tape nonsense.

I should call them and ask if there is not someone who is responsible for approving travel budgets. And if not why not. What do they do all day?

God my blood is boiling on your behalf jimjams.

Had a very irate head of preschool "services" on the phone today. They've agreed the travel expenses but then started going on about grants and things that really don't interest me. Have to say she was very rude and patronising, and slagged off the nursery which I think is very out of order (the nursery have done more for him than anyone else). She told me that ds1 "has to be in school, starting the same time of day as all the other children because children don't like to be different blah blah blah" (what she measn is so her spreadsheets add up- the school are pleased he is starting slowly). I told her that ds1 was severely autistic and didn't give a fig what the other children are doing.

Honestly I can see why parents who are moire underconfident (less stroppy? ) than me get upset. She was very intimidating. I don't really appreciate being shouted at for asking her to sort out funding so he can start school next week. If these people did their jobs I wouldn't have to get involved anyway.

Good for you Jimjams. You should join the snkids website mieow told me about, they are going to make "mother from hell" tshirts for all those stressful appointments we have to attend and get stroppy at. Did she shut up when you asserted yourself?

Jimjams · 15/09/2003 20:20

I need a mother from hell t-shirt! Where's the website?

She did shut up when I said that ds1 didn't give a fig about other chidren. She started talking about the need for auditing accounts instead (like I care!!!) More interested in my son getting a suitable education!

It's here Jimjams. You need to join before you can post, but it doesn't cost anything. Might be something there for you. I'm definitely getting the shirt!
