Not for my ds, (not his thing) but friend's son (also with ASD) enjoys spitting drinks out, (swills them round mouth and then spits/dribbles).

It's a sensory issue, but the sensory OT was useless with advice, so thought I would ask you wise SN mumsnetters...

I thought perhaps drinking with a straw as possibly the sucking action would encourage swallowing? but we would be really grateful for any ideas...

My ds used to be a spitter I addressed it by imposing a no spitting rule and giving him permission to spit in the bath should he choose.
So I'd say "no spitting ds,ds spit in bath" and then it was just a case of repeating it and plonking him in the empty bath, fully clothed , with a jug of water.
He actually got fed up pretty quickly when he didn't get any attention for it and he ended up in the bath every time.

Straws don't help lol I tried. Ds now not only spits but likes watching drinks dribble from his straw onto the table
