is appropiate for me to give a copy of my sons statement to his 1 to 1 teacher

Hi can anyone tell me if it is appropiate for me to give a copy of my sons statement to his 1 to 1 teacher. In a recent annual review i offered to do a copy of his statement and give it to his 1 to 1 teacher and the senco ,quite abbruptly. told me that this was very inappropiate.Any help or advice would be greatluy appreciated,thanks

I'm astonished that his 1 to 1 teacher hasn't already seen a copy! I'm a 1 to 1 support TA to a child with a statement and it was essential reading to understand his difficulties, needs and what provision I was supposed to be providing. Perhaps the SENCO meant that she should copy it? But it doesn't sound like that, does it? Statements often get broken down into small, achievable IEP targets, so they may be working from them. If you have no problem with the 1 to 1 teacher seeing the Statement then copy it for him/her.

Also maybe repost this in Special Needs Children as most MNers hover there.

i thought they would be sent a copy already not of all the info obviously but of the partcular things they are supposed to impliment but im still waiting for the final statement so the others are better to advice and will be along shortly ill be interested myself what they have to say on this as im new to the statement/dx and whole sen issues i can only go by my own exp sorry im so useless

I don't think all the advices are generally copied on, although I would be happy for anyone working with my DS to see my parental advice. Some of the medical or EP stuff might be a bit sensitive to distribute. But, still, if anything helps those working with my DS I'd be happy to share it. I saw all the advices of the child I support.

The greatest travesty of all re statements is most are jammed in a drawer somewhere and nto read anyway.

exactly, weve been 100% honest and not hidden anything from anyone schools or otherwise as how can they get a FULL picture of your DS'S educational & welfare needs without it, surely this is precisely what the statements intended for his edcational & physical/mental well being so i'd give them one or enquire what info HAS she been given as it may not be enough but others may disagree im certainly no expert

YOU can do as you please with your son's statement and it is not in any way inappropriate. I'd be concerned that the 1 - 1 was being asked to do things with other children and didn't realise that she is supposed to only work with your son.
