My DS is 10 years old - under ADOS assessment. Huge problem at school is that he only will take instructions from a selected number of teachers - class teacher, head SENCO and SENCO teacher. He would either ignore or shuts down when spoken to or would not co-operate when spoken to by any other teacher - from the school or relief teacher. Due to go to secondary school in spetember -and this . on course to the tribunal with the LEA for a mainstream school with a unit attached.

  1. any one have any suggestions if any .they have been faced with this
  1. now worried if mainstream will be suitable - as we have asked LEA for that.
  1. have a meeting with SENCO and teacher tomorrow to discuss startegies. we have used home report book - records positive behaviours - not working, used blue tags to reduce sensory issues - some luck. School is not coping with this behaviour. not sure what to do with this one.

If he will only cooperate with selected teachers I cannot see how he cold possibly cope in mainstream secondary where he may be taught by 4 or more teachers each day.

I woudl apply for an assessment for the need for a Statement in the hope it will identify suitable provision for him by Sep. But you'll have to be quick as this takes time.

School should be doing this for you but if they can't or won't then you can write to the Local Authority yourself and make your own request.

Sorry - didn't realise you had already applied. Unless the LA can provide a placement in an ASD unit you'll have to go to SENDIST.

Best wishes

yes, he has a statement, we are appealing the secondary school statement - LEA choise, we wanted one with ASD unit. Waiting for appeal in May. now worried all places will be gone by then. We had started this long before - seems LEA bent on going to appeal with this. Cant wait to see the ADOS result - might help - wonder if a small class will be better.

hi no may not help as size of class didnt make any diff for my DS so now hes going to SS , feel for you so unfair when you started this well in time and they are still mucking you about you need the that ADOS to dx ASD then you have more backing for yr demands our local schools with asd units does not mean that they stay in the unit for lessons but are in most MS classes an the "prof help " is done in the unit and they can use it as their retreat b4 school break times and after school to meet up and befriend other children in a same boat IYSWIM , this can vary one area to another, also surely if you have the DX you can then fight for the school with a unit i think you should go and visit them now to look around and see as this adds to your reasons for and against (if you have not been to see them already)as this is what i was advised as they can hardly say your wrong if youve viewed them and you know they are right for your dc
