My son has just been perscribed this. The chemist said it had been discontinued and gave us something different ( think I need go sort this with the doctor tomorrow)
I would so like to hear how someone else got on. As far as I know it is quick release and slow release combined

Hi Missy10,
How are you getting on?
We are having trouble getting our hands on metikinet xl- pharmacy gave equasym xl and said it was the same thing. But I've just looked it up on the net and it looks like it isn't ( if anyone knows better please advise) looks like I'm going to have to go back again- Wouldn't mind, but when I tried to explain to the chemist that paediatrician had said Metakinet xl was a combined dose of quick and slow release she looked at me as if I was mad and said "NOTHING does that!" Hmm
Sorry for moan , really hope it is all working out for you and your ds Smile

jellyhelly · 27/02/2011 17:23

Same drug BUT different release times---that is what makes the difference.

Hi all my 10 year old daughter has a diagnosis of asd and adhd and is on medikinet, is this the drug you are asking about?

jellyhelly · 27/02/2011 19:51

hi,
yep that's it- OP wanted to know peoples experiences.
We've tried Ritalin, Equysym xl and now medikinet and I have to say it's been great. Previous two led to massive melt downs and aggression- real rollercoaster. My DS alsp has ADHD and ASD.
How's it working for you?

daisytaylor · 27/02/2011 21:14

Well my daughter grace has only been on them for a few weeks. She takes 3 medikinet xl 10mg every morning and then at 4pm she takes 1 medikinet 10mg and 1 risperidone 500mg and then half hour before bed she takes 3 melatonin 2 mg tablets. To start with she got very hyper and talked very fast and then she suffered with headaches and dizziness so we cut out the morning tablets after the consultant advised. She has now gradually gone back on the 3 in the morning and is alot calmer and seems to control herself better. I have to say though i am nervous of the amount of medication she on but i have been told it's not that strong. She is starting to sleep better but still gets up and down during the night. She also has outbursts of barking and other animal noises which sadly has attracted bullying at school so we are really hoping these will help calm her at school too. My other daughter has asd but doesn't require any meds. She also suffers from audio prossessing disorder and short term learning memory and speech delay which after a 2 year wait she has just been offered thearapy. We are due back to the consultant in march to see how she is doing. I have to say i never had any problems getting these tablets. Our consultant said that the xl was a prolonged release lasting 8 hours and the 4pm is a 4 hour. It seems to be helping her.

Glad to hear that the medication is working/helping her- it takes such along time to get it right and makes such a difference.
