i have a 6 year old son with aspergers and an 18 month old son with severe global development delay. i can find lots of info about my older son but nothing about gdd. are there any mums here with a child with gdd? if so i would to talk to you and discuss how our children are doing and maybe give me some hope for the future? my email is [email protected] thanks.

hi, it seemed like i was the only person in the world with a son with gdd when they first diagnosed him. this is the only place i could find, other web sites are closed. my son jack was born on time, he was cold and grunting with slight jaundice but otherwise seemed ok. he kept his eyes firmly closed for 3 weeks then when he opend them he wouldnt focus. he is now 18 months and is still on stage 1 baby food. he has milk every 3 hours during the day and has just started drinking juice from a training cup. he started to sit at 17 months, doesnt crawl and has just started to pull himself to a wobbely stand in his play pen. his ultasound and eeg were normal and they dont want to do an mri scan because hes prone to chest infections. his consultant puts him in the 7 to 8 month age group. we have a support worker and portage weekly but hes still hard work. he wont let his physiotherapist near him lol. he likes mummy and his 17 year old sister. anyone else he cries at.is this how your daughter was doormat? has she improved? im sorry for waffling on everyone but ive got so many unanswered questions. thanks for replying

hello dawn, doormat has a son with a GDD. i havea six year old daughter with a severe GDD(and microcephaly, which means 'small brain") she still isnt diagnosed with anything specific. hopefully you will eventually get a diagnosis, usually through either genetics or neurology.

My daughter was slow to reach milestones, sat at about 10 or 11 months, crawled at 16 months, walked at 2, is still classed as non verbal. has very little speech, uses makaton sign. Goes to special school.

No-one actually knows what the future holds. your son may reach his milestones quickly and do better than people envisaged. i think the most important thing is to get as much early intervention as possible, physio SALT etc

hi thanks for your replies its comforting to talk to other parents. i dont feel so alone now. im still at the bursting into tears stage (like i just did reading this lol)my husband takes it all in his stride but i dont!

Hi Dawn67 - I have 2 sons (8 & 2) My youngest son has GDD as a preliminary dx - still undergoing genetic tests etc.

My ds2 still eats babyfood - although it is the 15 months plus stuff now. Can only cope with `normal food' mashed and has only started to finger feed soft bits in the last 4/5 months.

He is practically silent most of the time, apart from a few grunts and squeals and the occasional `mum,mum' and is now walking holding one finger.
He sat at 6 months, crawled at 13 months and started cruising at 18 months.

It is difficult having such an uncertain future ahead of us, but he manages to make my heart melt with his winning smiles

i know what you mean, when my youngest laughs he makes my heart melt too. he gets so frustrated and angry when he cant make me understand what he wants. he has no words yet either, lots of squeals and shrieking tho! my 6 year old with aspergers is a happy good boy. he likes to be left to do things on his own, hes like a little professer! they bring heartache but a lot of joy too
