Dc's chat thread idea

TheArsenicCupCake · 03/01/2011 16:26

Moved to here as was hijacking ambers thread.

Was wondering if it might be a nice idea if we have a thread ( maybe a bit like the Friday night too tired for) our dc's to have a natter together...

It may make the whole friend thing easier for them.. And we could keep a close eye on things for saftey reasons.

So any ideas or thoughts?

Would dc's have to sign in as a new member or should they just have a different user name and we name change? Not sure how it would work. Think it's a great idea though.

TheArsenicCupCake · 03/01/2011 16:37

Well I wonder if we had maybe a certain night or two a week then we could just name change linking in to our names.. But.. They could just sign in.. Maybe if it's a goer we could ask MnHQ ...obviously the dc's would be minors using an adult forum.. Which might cause MN an issue... But if we can link them in with us, I'd be more than happy to take responsability for ds.

Also it maybe a nice way to get them used to a few social niceties etc..

Yes and it would also help my ds's self-esteem as he would be so happy to have a 'virtual' friend.

TheArsenicCupCake · 03/01/2011 16:50

For ds too..

If it would be okay with HQ .. They could sign in on their own account and maybe we take it in turns to be a parent on the thread for the session. ( sort of baby sitting lol).
I also think we need to make sure no personal details go out and pm's are with parental permission from both parents only.

Ds talks rather a lot so I would have to impress on him the need not to give out too many details about himself Grin.I would keep quiet about the pm facility to start with.

TheArsenicCupCake · 03/01/2011 16:58

:D
I was going to say the same about ds!

wouldn't it be better to set up a yahoo group or use msn or FB
just remember there are a lot of lurkers on mn.
(dd can't type so won't join in, but sounds a good idea.)

TheArsenicCupCake · 03/01/2011 17:09

Very good point 2shoes :)

OP posts:
fightingtheurgetoscream · 03/01/2011 17:12

Wouldn't know to set up a Yahoo group but ds has been nagging me to use msn. FB is for 13+ so would rather not use that.

TheArsenicCupCake · 03/01/2011 17:15

Will look into private forum set up this evening.

It can't be that difficult !

2shoes is there anyway that could make access easier so dd could use it too ?

cornshilk007 · 03/01/2011 17:20

that's a fab idea

bullet234 · 03/01/2011 17:34

Ds1 loves typing on the computer, but unless others are prepared to read a list of names, or the Winnie the Pooh stories, it's probably best he doesn't join in.

TheArsenicCupCake · 03/01/2011 17:53

Bullet I can't see why that would be an issue! :) ds will probably bore everyone to death about starwars lol

right my boys are home now so I'll be back later on to read.
( and I'm going to collar ds1 about setting up a private forum for our dc's :))

OP posts:
fightingtheurgetoscream · 03/01/2011 18:04

Oh dear Arsenic, my ds will also be a contender for boring everyone to death about Star Wars too. He is also a bit of a computer geek and may drone on for hours!

purplepidjbauble · 03/01/2011 18:10

Isn't there a version of facebook for younger ones called penguin something or other???

DayShiftDoris · 03/01/2011 18:14

I was going to say that

Club Penquin... Scallypants is on it with his best mate. There are forums where they can chat and they can only choose pre-written questions and responses.

There is a cost if you join them as a full member but their is a free member bit.

It is an excellent site

LollipopViolet · 03/01/2011 19:21

I've got some experiences of setting up/running yahoo groups and other forums (Proboards mainly), if you need any help/advice just shout up! :)

TheArsenicCupCake · 03/01/2011 20:39

Lpv that sounds great! :)

right I ran this past ds2 ( inbetween him bouncing about like a jumping bean because he's just got back from his dads)
and he did two thumbs up and said cool do any of them like starwars?!
( I apologise in advance )
and I said that there was someone who likes winnie the pooh :) and ds said cool and then recited a whole load of winnie the pooh stuff ( because it was one of his old obsessions!)

anyway.. Certainly from ds it looks very much that he would like to do this :)

fightingtheurgetoscream · 03/01/2011 21:17

Thanks Lolli - how easy is it and how do we start?

LollipopViolet · 03/01/2011 21:21

Try searching for Proboards, they're free, and I seem to remember you can set them so that to even see forum headings, you need a log in. I think you can also set it so you have to approve new registrations, so someone on here could be the admin, and to get an account, you'd need to PM them the details of the account, so they can approve it iyswim?

TheArsenicCupCake · 03/01/2011 22:14

Thanks lpv I'll look that up :)

Ooh er sounds a bit complicated Arsenic. I will try to have a look into later - ill with flu at the moment.

TheArsenicCupCake · 04/01/2011 21:29

Gah to flu!.. Take as much time as you can as it's a sod ( I had it before Xmas and it wiped me out.. Still have the stupid cough!).

I have roped in ds1 to help me out lol so the weekend is looking pretty good I think :)

OP posts:
fightingtheurgetomn · 04/01/2011 21:56

That's good - ds keeps hassling me to see what's happening Grin
