Does anyone understand the Connors Questionnaire scoring????

I got a copy of a letter today from Clincal pyschologist to Pead stating scores and if she felt a referral to ADHD clinic is needed but have no idea what the scores mean!!!

AFAIK a high score (from both parents and teachers) means highly likely to have ADHD

Glad you asked this. We've been knocked back for a referral to CAMHS with this test. Apparently DS only scored 49. They cited teacher's response (i.e they ignored mine!) and they added that his difficulties were in line with his ASD. School are perplexed because they said they really 'talked it up' IYKWIM.

They now want Ed Pysch to do a cognitive functioning test....

If my memory serves me correctly scores of 50-60 are seen as not significant, score of 60-70 interpreted as being of concern and 70 and above is clinically significant but would need to check to be definite of those scores

The conners are completed by school and home as for a diagnosis of ADHD (DSM IV and ICD 10) they need to present with difficulties in 2 environments such as home and school. Girls and boys have their own scoring system and age is also taken into consideration.

The conners is usually used a indicator not a diagnostic tool. I've seen many children score high on the conners and not have ADHD and also score low and end up with ADHD diagnosis.

Liz are they scored simply by 'totting' up the 1,2, & 3 scores or is it more complicated then that?

It's a bit more complicated. It's been a year or so since I've used one but again if my memory serves me correctly it's not simply if you circle 1 you get one point it mixed up so there is a specific sheet to work the scores out. These scores are then moved to a scale which is sex and age specific to give you a total and this is the total you might get to hear about that I wrote about in the above post. I think they split the ages 3-5, 6-8 and 9-11 if that's of any help.

Who would know having a baby and being on maternity leave would leave your brain mush!!! Frightening how quickly you forget things.

The scoring is more complex than just adding up the scores.
I haven't done a parents one for a while so cant remember if that differs much from the teachers one I send out...
But for scoring the teachers one each of the questions is used to contribute a score to one of 5 ( I think its 5, cant be sure off hand but around 5)"profiles" for example "oppositional", "attention/cognition" "hyperactivity" and then one particular profile is "ADHD index"
So what you do is add up the scores for each profile (when you open the sheets up it is arranged so that you write the responses (ie 1,2 or 3) in the right columns for each profile, then add the columns) Then you get a score for each thing eg oppositional, ADHD etc..
Then you need to plot these scores on a graph. This is also varied by age so for example what may be a high score for a 10 yr old, isnt necessarily a high score for a 4 yr old and the way you plot the graph reflects this.Once you have plotted the points and joined them the graph will give you a profile which should demonstrate the areas in which the child is likely to have the most difficulties.
A single score can not be used on it's own, as it is the profile of the graph that is really important.
As lizE09 says it is only a TOOL and should e the only thing used in forming a diagnosis. It can be useful starting point, but should then be followed up with other investigations. It can also be useful to monitor improvements or changes in a condition, but again is only a TOOL

Well the scores my DS at 5 yrs old got was a ADHD index score (T Score)was 80 for parents and 75 for school!! x

OK, so that was one score which will have been based on about 1/3 of the questions asked. There would have been other scores too based on answers to other questions, but that may be the most useful to report back to you if that is what your DS was being assessed for. They will also have plotted all the scores to show an overall profile for your DS.

Spinkle I would be concerned if you were refused a CAMHS assessment based solely on this test, as liz says this should form only part of an assessment. Maybe you could ring them to discuss further why they aren't seeing you? Although an Ed Psych assessment sounds a good move, and may hopefully shed more light on your DS difficulties.

Thanks for that OverflowingMum I will give them a ring but feel maybe his 'busyness' might be down to sensory seeking stuff. Plus, for some reason he's always a bit manic when we see the community paed (who referred us).

His teacher, I think, wanted the ADHD diagnosis to get him medicated (i.e make her life easier!) and said she'd answered mostly 1's and 2's on the test (that is, trying to second guess it). I guess her strategy didn't work!

I think when tired my DS doesn't slow down, he gets faster and she may have clocked that at school and decided it was ADHD...

Hi ladies so I did the conners parent to my mind I score 217 but the paperwork inside is baffling to me there is male sheet and female sheet inside with scorings for each question I suppose it's a case of sit and wait not like I havnt already been doing for last 8 yrs. But actually since moving to London from Derby I find that london is alot better

I've received my conners questionnaire and myself and partner have completed the questions but as for the rest I'm confused.com lol as I've got a score of 184 but I've no idea how to complete the rest of forms ie graphs etc and wondered if any other parents found the same issues and if anyone able to offer advice etc thanks so much as since we had our daughter now 11 months my son aged 6 will not leave her alone constantly picks her up over the last 3mnths and find myself saying not to do this over 40x a day and he's always on one can't settle, has to be outside even when he's back from school he has some cereal and he's off outside to eat it like he will miss something if he's not out and latly becoming more argumentative angry etc sorry long message thanks in advance for your time and help x kim x
