school refusal

I have a meeting on Wed with the social worker and head of education to work out strategies for getting my son back into school. He is a prolific school refuser, he tells me he doesn't like the noise, he doesn't want friends and from what I can see most of the stuff they do there he has different issues with around development, sensory etc. He goes to special school and there is only 7 of them in the class. I have also proven school to be over positive around my son. He is also quite challenging and complex and primarily down syndrome. TIA x

Do you take him to school or does he go by transport?

Sounds really hard going :(

Birthday was lovely thanks :)

Would he go to school better if you took him? You still looking to change schools?

devientenigma · 21/11/2010 17:19

I do take him if I can get him out of the house, the teachers come and get him from my car. The sw is going to ask for a change of school, though this is for other reasons also. However I have been reading about school refusal and it's saying you shouldn't change school.
Glad you had a lovely birthday.

Sorry I popped off, had to bath DS2, takes about an hour to do!

Would half days be an option for him, to get back into the swing of things? Does he have many friends at school, or does he just not want to socialise?

I was thinking about this the other day for you, I really am at a loss as to what you can do!

dev what book said you should not change school and why does it say it (curious that's all!) as ds on long long break from school and looking to change it

BUMP:)

Hi sleep, it wasn't a book, it was one of the internet sites on school refusal, when I find it again I will do a link.
However I have been reading school refusal by Mike fortune wood. This book was very interesting for me, however no use with the profs.

Can he be educated at home by the LEA?

devientenigma · 22/11/2010 10:09

thanks corn, that is one of the things I am going to suggest, however I don't think they will go for this as he is unsociable and most times you can't get him to leave the house to so an activity, they see this as a reinforcement!!
