I attended a multi-disp meeting at DD1s school yesterday, requested by the senco. Ed psych, camhs and salt were all there, as the consultant had requested assessments from all of them. DD1 is 13, has dx of dyspraxia, speeach and sensory processing disorder, and the current focus is to assess for ASD/Aspergers.

Last week i was told by CAMHS that they were referring for a 3DI assessment. Yesterday i was told that by the time everyone else does their part, the 3DI would be out of date, so that would be a waste of time.

So instead, they are going to refer to (cant remember the acronym, but it is a multi-team meeting they hold once a month) SETC or something like that. But that will mean that no assessments etc until at least next May.

I am completely confused, there seemed to be a lot of "but if we do this, then you do that" kind of talk" which left me really Confused

At least the salt seemed to be on the ball, and was pushing the ed psych to do a cognitive assessment (as i dont think she was keen, kept talking about how busy she was) but i am not even sure what that would entail.

I think i am going to request the minutes from the meeting, but i would really appreciate it if someone could perhaps unravel it for me?

The 3di is a parental interview which goes through your child's development from birth so don't know how they can say it would be out of date?

The cognitive assessment would show the areas of strength and weakness of your child and show up difficulties your child is having. The school should get the EP to do this regardless how busy she is!

They make it so difficult don't they?

Definitively ask for the minutes of the meeting and don't give up keep pushing for a full assessment.

until one of our experienced feisty fighters comes along, I'll have a stab at a reply....

sounds like some sort of internal politics/budget problems, suggesting not doing the 3di for that sort of reason seems a bit feeble, as I imagine a lot of the questionnaires would be about general development... call me cynical, but isn't next May conveniently in time for the next financial year. Might be worth trying to get a message to consultant via his secretary as to plans for 3di disintegrating, though of course it may be he doesn't have clout over CAHMS???

re:cognitive assessment -DS had one when he was 4, it was a few non-verbal intelligence tests, copying patterns of blocks and spotting the odd one outs, and then getting him to do simple jigsaws/copy a stick man etc. I imagine for a teen it would be a bit more involved than that, so a more grown up type of intelligence test.

thanks guys. I wondered about budget/politics, and may mention something along those lines to the lovely salt lady, who is going to ring to start work with DD1 in a couple of weeks. We are also back at the consultant next week, and i know he was expecting all this to be sorted by our November appointmentHmm

The cognitive assessment description is very helpful, thanks abitw. That is along the lines of what the ed psych said as far as i can rememberBlush
