DS2 always in trouble for the same thing

Hello all, DS2 is now 7 and attends MS school with a full statement.

He has di-george syndrome which has given him a hearing loss, severe speech difficulty to the point that he now has a communication aid, and some learning difficulty amongst other things.

Since the beginning of year 2 he has been put on a 'cloud' at least once a week for not listening properly. I have just been through his diary and note that they have all been for literacy/history/geography and all when new instructions have been issued.

Now I am certainly under no illusion that he isn't a little wotsit sometimes but I can't shake this feeling that he just hasn't understood the instructions initially and just phases out iyswim.

He is starting to become upset at home when I ask him about it and I don't know whether I should just leave it and let school deal with it or continue to try and discuss it with him.

What do you think?

He is becoming increasingly difficult at home in terms of needing routine etc which I have struggled with since having DS3 (6 months) and I am starting to get concerned that none of us are dealing with him correctly.

Are the school good? Would you be able to meet with them to discuss this?

Could you request that whilst the cloud thing can stay could they please be very VERY careful that they don't use it for new instructions?

Also, a cloud isn't very nice. I thought schools were supposed to reward good behaviour and ignore bad, so NOT getting a sun is okay, but giving a cloud is a bit of a no no.

I just found out today that ds has a listening tree. wtf is a listening tree?

A listening tree??!!! That's a new one to me!!!

Yes, on the whole the school are good in terms of that they try, but I think they are out of their depth with him. They have a SN teacher coming in next week from the outreach service to advise them so I may ask them to discuss this with her.

That's a good idea about not using it for new topics/ instructions.

Actually, I feel really fed up about the whole SN thing today. Everything's such bloody hard work!

Thinking that it might be helppful if you could go to the meeting with the outreach teacher too - even if it is just for part of it??

Yes, I will ask about going into school when SN teacher is there.

I can't shake this feeling that now is the time to seriously consider a SN school. There are none that meet his needs nearby is the only stumbling block!

I would have a word with teacher to try establishing what goes wrong for him to go on the cloud and subtly explain the concern you have as you did in your post.

My DS (5 , asd) is also on the cloud at least twice a week for refusal to do activities and regularly for not sitting down properly at carpet time.

As we have a meeting with school and EP next week , i will raise this issue with them then.

this is exactly the sort of thing I have gone in high dudgeon to complain to DS's teacher about (not always entirely justifiably ) but one thing i am not prepared to tolerate is DS being penalised for not understanding. Hope the specialist teacher can sort things out.

That's it exactly, I feel he is being punished for something he cannot help. With his hearing it is very easy for him to zone out and I think that as soon as he has lost the thread he goes to planet dollydaydream! Tbh I don't really blame him. School is exhausting enough for him.

I don't very often get down about his difficulties nowadays but I am today.

He has a couple of operations coming up that are probably adding to my anxiety.

DS was briefly in a pre-school with a cloud/sun behaviour system. Was very glad he moved as even before any diagnosis it was obviously stupid, cruel and counterproductive.
