my son is 6 and has just started the 10mg capsule tabletds for adhd. sat and sun we opened the capsule and poured in a yoghurt but he finds the little blue balls a horrible texture in the yoghurt. this morning we ended up throwing the yoghurt and then poured a new capsule in his drink, but bits were staying at the bottom of the cup, ended up licking them of a spoon then washing down with a drink. was late for school as of the comotion. any simple tips out there from anyone i would be very grateful xxx

It is a lot easier if you can get him to swallow the pill. I used a technique where you place the pill on the middle of his tongue, towards back but not at back, and then help him to gulp a big glug of water down, taking pill with it. Once he gets the hang of it, it is so much easier. Hopefully the pills are not too big for this though?

what a pain. I did try a blueberry vitamin juice once - the high flavour masked the taste and if you do it on a teaspoon and quickly follow with water?

I'm not familiar with that particular pill. But if it opens up to sprinkles, a common cheat would be to put the sprinkles in a jam sandwich. Obviously if it's 3 a day it would have to be a fairly small jam sandwich or he'll start turning into one!

My experience with pills if you're trying to swallow the capsule whole is that eating works much better than drinking. The motion of chewing relaxes the muscles in the throat, in preparation for swallowing; drinking doesn't do this. So if I've got a pill I struggle to take (I'm not good with pills) I take it with food, chew a mouthful, chuck the pill in and swallow both together; goes down much easier than trying to take the same pill with a glass of water. Not sure if your 6yo will get the trick to doing that without chewing the actual pill though, which would probably be worse than the yoghurt!

i got my ds(almost 5) to take tablets by drinking with a straw. i pop the tablet in his mouth and get him to suck on the straw. as you can not help but swallow with the sucking, the tablets go down (sounds very rude i know, but every time i rephase, it sounds worse). it did take a whille for him to get used to it but now he has no problems and takes most of his medicines this way.
