Requesting a statutory assessment

Hi my son is 10 and was assessed by dyslexia action as being severley dyslexic earlier this year. Prior to that the school had assessed him and said he wasn't dyslexic. He is having support from the senco teacher but this is ad hoc and not always on a weekly basis as recorded in his IEP. Due to being concerned about his progress in reading and spelling he is having tuition with dyslexia action outside of school which I am funding. He has been at school 4 weeks now and has had no support from senco which I believe is due to staffing problems. I am thinking of requesting a statutory assessment as I do not feel the school are fulfilling their role and I am worried about sons progress. Can anyone advise if I should request this?

You are doing the right thing request an assessment, I have been in a similar position and have received a SEN, however the fight moves on to what you want as a parent, ie move support or attend a specialist school.
