Hi, my DH and I are moving to York in next 3-4 months (to work at the uni) and I have 5 year old with autism. He is in a unit attached to mainstream and doing well. I don't know anyone in the area. Just wondered if anyone can give me some advice about services and support in local area. I have already been in touch with specialist teaching service in York. also any advice about nice areas to live; currently looking at Askham Lane/ Rawcliffe areas....thanks!

There is a Primary specialist unit at Haxby Road. Further down the line there are Secondary specialist units attached to Fulford school, and to Joseph Rowntree School.

As everywhere, provision is stretched, and you need to fight your corner. Having said that, my friends Social worker is brilliant.

I believe that a new specialist Teacher of students with ASD has just been appointed to support mainstream provision.

There is a York NAS branch and a company called therapy in praxis which does therapy type stuff but not used it myself. York traffic is legendary so you want to avoid driving as much as poss or certainly doing trial run at school time when house hunting. If looking at villages be careful as some schools come under city of York education and some under north yorks and I would not recommend north Yorks LA to anyone unless they are very happy in mainstream and need little support.
