My Dd3 is left handed today after school she went to knitting club, I knew it could be a bad idea but she wanted to go and we need her to be positive about school. Anyway I filled in the permission slip and wrote in large letters on the bottom "Please can someone tell the knitting ladies that Dd3 is left handed". I also told her to tell them[ it is being run by the WI, they have been doing it for a year already]. Any way she came out and said she hadn't been able to do it. I asked her if they had tried to teach her and she said "No they haven't got anyone left handed so I have got to learn right handed" I remained calm [it is the WI] and said how did you get on, she said " I could only do one stitch and the lady did it for me, I had to do nothing." she also said she wanted to shout at them but just gave them "A Look".
I know in the grand scheme of things this is very minor but come on, why offer an after school club to a child and then leave them sitting for an hour with nothing to do. I could have gone and fetched her if I had known.SadSad.

that sounds plain daft,
do you know anyone who could teach her the basics, (imagine how much she could show of the the WI)

Not a leftie no. I am a mixture myself and anything to do with wool, string or similar always ends badlyGrin.

could you put a call out on mn, there might be someone near you who could help(My SIL is left handed and used to knit)

TheArsenicCupCake · 14/09/2010 17:56

Dsis used to knit and was left handed.. She learnt by sitting opposite my mum and watching.

I thought they would do that TACC, I am p..... off that they said she would just have to do it right handed. Surely thats not the right attitude in 2010??

2shoes... could name change right so don't have to give away location. Have said a lot about school on here!!Hmm

There's a forum called ravelry that has videos of knitting etc that you could use to get her started, really useful. If you sign up the permission to enrol comes in a few days as it is a popular site.

and if you search video left handed kniting a fair bit comes up

I was going to say the same as TACC - sit her opposite someone and get her to imitate.

that's how my mum learnt, and she was an ace knitter (sadly, didn't work again - as I am a leftie too, and she was baffled as to how to go abut teaching me! but my brothers can both knot well, as they did the same - sat opposite her and copied)

totally agree not the right attitude

I'm a leftie, i can remember my mum trying to teach me to knitt, i could never do it Sad, my step dd can knitt though and she is left handed.

wigglybeezer · 14/09/2010 21:53

you need to get a continental knitter to show her, they do it the other way round in some European countries! Seriously, I am a knitter and my left-handed DS1 managed to knit a rather holey square right- handed before he got bored, knitting uses both hands so it is possible for a leftie to knit right-handed if they persist, I would print out some illustrations on how to knit having flipped them 180o. Why don't you have a go too, if you are a bit rubbish but have a laugh about it might be fun! Don't be too hard on the ladies, its hard enough teaching left-handers how to tie shoelaces.

Ineed2 · 14/09/2010 22:01

No wiggly I wouldn't dream of being hard on the ladies they were volunteers after all, I just felt sorry for dd3, there was a teacher present too, I wondered if maybe somebody could have found her something else to do if she wasn't going to be able to knit. My aunt was a great knitter and she was leftie but sadly she's not around to teach Dd3Sad.
I think I am probably v.oversensitive at the mo. Dd3 is struggling with stuff and seems a bit lost and down and it rubs off on me.
