How to support ds myself?

Ds is 4.9 and has recently finished a language group placement he attended since September. He has made great progress in language but his speech is very unclear and is now waiting for speech therapy and the wait is 6 months plus.I was wondering if anyone could offer any guidance or point me to something I could read/buy etc that would help me support him myself in the meantime. I have asked the salt at his speech assessment and they told me to work on s and f in isolation.

Thanks x

U cd stand face to face with him and practise all letter sounds, moving on to commonly-used words. He needs to see and then copy correct mouth shapes. The other thing we have found helpful (my boy also speaks unclearly) is to separate syllables - eg toa

  • st. Reward gd attempts at clarity hugely and get him to repeat clearly when he is unclear. It is painstaking work, but does get results. Good luck!

cerebra sometimes do a voucher scheme for SALT if you are stuck on a long waiting list. There might also be a drop in SALT session at a local surestart centre etc where you could go along and make a nuisance of yourself!
