ASD and toilet issues

Hi ds1 is 7 and dx ASD nearly 2 years ago. He is dry day and night, though we cheat at night by not giving him a drink past 6pm, and/or lifting him if he's drank later.
Now he always leaves going to the toilet (for both) until the very last minute, and I have gone on and on at him about this. He also gets tummy pain and I think it's because he leaves it until the very last minute, and we also have accidents because of this.

Now it's hit me today that, can he actually feel the need for the toilet earlier, or can he only feel it at the last moment?

I've tried to talk to him about it but he doesn't understand what I'm asking him.

Has anyone else got experience of this? Should I get intouch with his GP or his Paediatrician? (sp?)

VJay from the looks of things there are plenty of us struggling with toilet issues at the moment!

we are earlier on in the process than you are so can't offer advice but am wondering if you have a local Continence Service that can help? we have been promised help from them once ds turns 4 (which is 2 days time - have visions of them galloping on b-day up to doorstep on white horse and magic wand - NOT Grin )

good luck anyway, there is a support thread started not so long ago if you want to dig it up :)

We are seeing a medical paed for this very same thing. He has prescribed Movical for our son not because hes constipated but to try to get him "feeling" that need to go..

Thankyou for your replies Smile, after I posted this I saw quite a few threads similar to this. I am interested in the Movical helping them 'feel' the need to go as that is what I think he is having trouble with. I am going to contact his paed on Monday.

My ASD DD is also 7 and it only struck me on reading your post that she is exactly the same- she always says that somebody made her laugh and then she weed herself. I'm making reminder cards to put on a chart for her so she schedules to go to the toilet.

We also have poo issues- she refuses to wipe, not sure if anyone else has this?

Ds1 doesn't refuse to wipe as such, but does it when I remind him. I have been putting it down to laziness, but now I'm not sure. I am going to try and get hold of his paed today.
