My 4 yr old son (turns 5 end of August) has just finished his 1st year at school.

We had a meeting with his teacher 2 days before he finished term and she has informed us that she feels he has some particular problems and feels that we should think about getting him referred to the child development centre.

Mainly the problems consist of of a social nature ie participating in group activities and with peers. Also gets v tired and then becomes uncooperative and can lash out. She has also said that his motor skills are not comparable with peers and appears much less mature. He has also had problems with the routine of the school day.

I am obviously really upset and feel quite isolated. He has been referred by GP and I am getting a private OT assessment done in a couple of weeks. I feel everything is in the air and not sure what happens now?

We have had a lovely week together since school has finished! His reading is coming on well and we have been practicing his writing which he has found hard as only had glasses since xmas.(v long sighted) He told me he gets called stupid and baby at school which makes him sad so have tried to do lots of things to boost his confidence. I think he is great! Any advice from people in similar situation would be great!

Post over in the main SN Children board and you'll get more replies.

Loads of us have been in this boat. Nothing happens quickly :(

You will be going through an awful lot of emotions.

First of all, you are very lucky his problems have been noticed and that you have got a referrel to the CDC. This is the absolute first thing that needs to be done. He is obviously at a great school for them to do this.

But whatever dx you get - your boy is still the same gorgeous boy you love.

Anway, post on the main board and you should get loads of support. And keep posting. We are all here for you.
