SAL Assessment what to expect?

Ds 4.8 has been receiving salt for over a year now. He has never been officially assessed which I have always wondered about especially after read other threads on here. Anyway he has an assessment coming up with the lead sal consultant and sal specialist and maybe current salt and wondering what to expect?? Salt said they would talk about suspected dyspraxia. Can they dx? Not that a am desperate for a label but would be nice to have an answer and may help with support.

Thanks

it was the salt that dx ds3 with verbal and oral dyspraxia not the paed

Sounds like you've got everyone necessary for a S & L diagnosis there- which is good.
It means that your normal SLT has referred your Ds to the specialist SLT which is also very positive as it means you will (hopefully) get specialist help from now on.

Good luck - assessment appointments can be quite upsetting, but if it is dyspraxia things will get better

you could use xx to maybe push for speech unit

There are big cut backs in salt this year in my area so I hope a dx may help get ds a little more help. I don't think there are any speech units near me though?? There are two language units but ds really needs more speech support. He has spent this academic year in a nursery language resource and I didn't know when he started that the salt there would not work on his speech or even assess it.

Well ds had his appointment today and no dx. They assessed what sound he could and couldn't say. They said there was improvement from when his last salt did this.

After looking in his mouth they think there is some structurally wrong and he is being referred to the specialists team in great ormonds street we already have a referral to ent as his tonsils are very big the salt also thought he had a wide uvula. He also will receive speech therapy but the waiting list is 6 months + I asked for advice on helping him my self in the meantime which they gave me so photocopies.

I then asked about Dyspraxia and she said that it could be but wouldn't say till they see how he responds to therapy. She said they would talk to ds's salt he has just finished with and decide about referring him to some nutfield dyspraxia programme?? can't remember exactly what she said. I wanted to ask her but she carried on and forgot to ask later. She is gonna ring later in the week about that so will ask again.

Thank again for the responses x
