Hi
My son has a statement and i have just recieved his end of year report. Reading, writing and maths are all p6. At the end of last year his reading was p4, but writing and maths was p6. So although he has made progress in reading, hes made none in maths and writing.

For him to have made no progress something is obviously wrong. Spoke to his teacher who just said hes made some progress!

So whats the next best step? Do i call an early review of the statement (due dec) or a re assessment?

Difficult to advise you without knowing what the statement is for or what level of support he gets.

Secondly, he should be having termly IEPs with you, teacher and SENCO to check on progress, set SMART targets. SMART means specific, measurable, achievable, reviewed targets. Half termly is better and will be necessary next year.

Thirdly, is he actually getting the support in the statement. Is the teacher using the learning assistant as an extra pair of hands in the classroom, sending him/her off to do photocopying or help other kids as well, for example. Check this with your son and his friends.

I would arrange an urgent meeting with the school, including the head, to discuss this. Consider taking an advocate along - Mencap or your local dyslexia group may be able to help. Confirm in writing afterwards.

No progress at all is very worrying, because it actually means he has dropped a full year behind.

Good luck.

Hi thanks for reply

My son has autism and has 25 hours of support. He is in a small group in the mornings which target maths english and statement objectives. 6 children, 3 ta's. As i found out yesterday, no teacher!
Afternoons normal class.

You mention termly iep's. I thought this and questioned teacher. But she said no, just twice a year!

Asked in the office this morning for a meeting with the head. Was told he's to busy now, and cant have a meeting until september! Have written to head requesting meeting before end of term. Waiting to see what happens.
