Statementing a 13 yr old

I believe my son need additional help. He is currently being assessed for Asperger's syndrome. He is above average but bottom of his class and almost bottom of he's year. He can not concertrate without constant prompting...Ive heard it is hard to get a statement and was wondering if anyone had got any advice as to really push for one. I fear he will leave school with no qualifications when clearly he is intelligent enough to have them.

Try posting this on the Special Needs board. There are many parents of children with Aspergers who contribute there. They also have experience of the special educational needs statement process. Good luck

As a parent you can request a statement - although it is easier if you can request the school to do it.
Go to the ipsea website - ring them for advice.
THey will talk you through the process.
It depends on the borough/lea on how easy it is to get a statement - generally not easy but worth it as it guarantees extra resources, teaching and money
Get a full assessment from the ed psych - also check for dyslexia and/or dyspraxia as they sometimes co-exist with Aspergers - which may be affecting his learning
