Mastering memory software and the Listening Program

I am interested in the MAstering Memory software for improving short term memory and the Listening Program for dyslexia - has anyone tried either of these?

They are both quite expensive and I don't want to waste time and money on ineffective stuff!

my ds uses some of these at his special needs club and most parents seem to find these really good

bumping for you as not seen myself as dc go in alone to computer room but maybe someone has them themselves and can help you

Don't waste your money -there is no good scientific evidence that these are effective -the only evidence they produce is for individual case-studies, which mean nothing.

Go for remedial, synthetic phonics programme tutoring instead and you'll get great results.

hi Maverick, thanks v much for the advice. We are doing Toe by Toe - is that what you mean by synthetic phonics?

Toe by Toe is only semi-synthetic phonics; better than whole-language, but not much! Also, IMO it is dull, dull ,dull.

If you want something really cheap and more like true synthetic phonics and which includes the important writing practice which Toe by Toe leaves out -have a look at The Butterfly Book by Irina Tyk.

If you can afford more and want fast results -then search out a Sound Reading System tutor local to you.

I have ordered the Butterfly Book but can't seem to find out about whether there are any local Sound Reading System tutors...do you know how I can find them?

I am struggling to find any specific tuition for dyslexia local to me .

Agree about Toe by Toe being dull by the way.. a whole new level of dull but without it I dread to think where my dd would be ...it is definitely helping her

The Listening Program my dd found v unpleasant and having blown a lot of money the practitioner told me it was not the right program for my dd after all.

Podrick, out of interest, what didn't you like about the Butterfly Book -feedback is very useful.

Hello maverick! My dd is 9 and I think the Butterfly book is more suitable for a younger child.

I have used mastering memory. I prefer using wooden letters and getting them to remember sequences. You can do auditory and visual memory training this way.
