School Action and School Action Plus

Is there anyone here who could explain these to me in words of one syllable please?!! I am a bit confused as to where we are in the whole process with DS but I would like to get it clear in my mind before he goes back to school on Wednesday.

(I'm in FE so it does not apply to the students I teach)

School Action is some sort of Action (like being on report / monitored by tutor, head of year, etc etc) that is carried out by school. School Action Plus means more than just school-level intervention of some sort - eg, involvement of LEA (statementing) or Ed Psych and so on.

That's what it meant at school I worked at anyway!

Sorry, Cornsilk, not ignoring you!

I am not sure we have done things the right way round, but we have an OTPT assessment,and he is monitored by the hearing advisory teacher who has referred him to the CIDS team and the Ed Psych. Only then did the school agree to do anything. The head and Senco have agreed what I can only describe as an IEP without a name.

My concern is that if these things are not named then if he needs a statement later on we may have to start the process all over again.

OK, I think I've got this right. School Action is extra help beyond the norm, School Action Plus is getting outside agencies involved. From Blu's link, I see that ds should be involved in the discussions regarding his extra help, but I also noticed in mrz's link that

"Sometimes the school will not write an IEP but will record how they are meeting your child's needs in a different way, perhaps as part of their lesson plans."

So, if they do not write an IEP, does it count in the future?

Sorry if I am asking too many questions. I do appreciate your help!

school action is differentiation in class.
School action plus is help beyond the norm - not neccessarily getting outside agencies involved.

Don't know your son's issues but I suspect that if the hearing advisory teacher is involved he should be school action plus, as this is outside support. When DS started school he was not on the register as school argued he was not under achieving but with the support of the TOD he is now on action plus and has a limited level of support in school. We are very conscious that his condition could deteriorate and he will need a record of IEP's etc to get further support.

my son has a school action plus, i'm dreading the start of school more targets that he will miss and i'll get depressed about

I know, sea. Ds hates school, he hates being different because of his hearing aids, and now we have to add in extra equipment and targets, as well as the intensive reading help he will be getting.

So geogteach, are the lesson plans enough to record the differentiation or should I be asking for a formal IEP?

We have an IEP. Targets vary, at the start of school they were as simple as coping with school swimming lessons which he was very concerned about at the time. Now they are mainly based on speech therapy targets, therapist visits about twice a year but does leave a detailed programme of stuff for the ta to work on. I see it largely as a paper trail for if the worst happens, the TOD is helpful in making sure that targets are appropriate and achieved. How old is your DS? DS is going into year 3, he wears hearing aids fine and tolerates fm system in school but won't use it for stuff like beavers. Hope that helps, let me know if you have other questions.

Once again, thank you all. I feel better equipped to go in on Wednesday!

Geogteach, DS is also going into year 3, he tolerates his hearing aids for school but will not wear them for anything else. Our hearing advisory teacher has recommended a sound field system, I shall remind the school but I'm not holding my breath...

Stuff like soundfield system I think is down to local authority (radio definately is)in which case it is TOD who needs to sort it not the school.

they don't have to do an iep, however under the code of practice they do need to record what is in place for your son and track his progress. This is to be discussed with you as a minimum twice a year.

Ask for their provision mapping.
