Hello,

My son who is 10 and in year six, which is a hard year and just been diagnosed with Autism and we are awaiting testing for ADHD, my son masks it at school, so the school believe there are no issues at all but at home he is wild, no patience, melt downs etc…
I spoke with the SENCO today she told me my son wouldn’t get an EHCP, is this correct?

It is possible to get EHCPs for DC who mask.

Unfortunately, some schools incorrectly tell parents their DC doesn’t need &/or won’t get an EHCP, but parents go on to successfully request an EHCNA themselves, even if they have to appeal.

The first test you need to focus on is that for an EHCNA. For that, you only have to show DS a) has or may have SEN, and b) may need special educational provision to be made via an EHCP. It is a relatively low bar.

What do you want out of having one? Genuinely curious as he masks at school so the challenge is at home, so I’m just trying to think what provision school can provide? I think if you have clear goals for the provision you want in the ehcp then go for it.

Appearing to cope at school and exploding at home is known as the coke bottle effect of after-school restraint collapse. It signifies unmet needs at school. If school life was easier, home life would improve too. Her DS needs more support at school. Just because he appears fine at school doesn’t mean he actually is. There will be signs the school isn’t seeing or is seeing, but not recognising them for what they are.

OP doesn’t need to know what provision would be in an EHCP, that is the purpose of the EHCNA.

Thank you that makes sense. I guess for my son we were clear what he needed but that’s not the case for everyone.

OP apply and good luck 🤞

It is well worth doing in case his needs increase at secondary.
