Hi! I think my son may be autistic or has another learning disability (both run in my family). He is delayed with speech, has only really started talking in sentences. So I can't ask him about how he's feeling or get him to talk about any worries he has etc.
He was mostly fine with preschool, occasionally he wouldn't want to go, but as a whole it was easy getting him ready and getting him there. His old preschool is right next to where he goes to school now. His school also did introductory sessions once a week during the last term before summer holidays, so his school isn't a completely new environment.
Since he started school 2 weeks ago, his behaviour has done a complete 180. He's having tantrums, not wanting to get ready (for both school and going to bed), not wanting to go into school and then not wanting to come home. Anything we ask him to do is met with a no, and if we're firm with it he'll have a tantrum.
Please say it gets easier, and if you have any tips. He has a reward chart, but that's not working because when I tell him that if he doesn't listen to me he won't get a star, he just tells me he doesn't want one. Or even if I say "if you get ready for bed, you'll get a star" he'll say no. I praise his good behaviour, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.
Is it just a case of waiting for him to get used to the new change?
