Messy mouth…

Hi my 11 asd daughter constantly has a messy mouth when eating. She doesn’t seem to notice when her mouth is dirty from her food! I’m constantly wiping it. She will wipe it when I ask her to but she needs to do this without prompting! Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Has DD had an OT assessment?

What are her motor skills (fine and gross) like in general?

Hadn’t thought to ask OT, good idea. Her motor skills are good.

You can buy bandana style bibs with poppers in lovely prints. I’d try this at home as it’s there as a reminder just lift and wipe.
Outside the home or at school would she use a wet wipe or kitchen roll?

If she’s not aware how messy she’s getting how about a mirror to show her? Not all the time of course. Would she practice wiping food off a hairstyling dolls head? ( yogurt maybe)

Would she respond to tokens or a positive reward system whilst learning?
