ADHD meds help

I’m looking for some advice from parents with children who have ADHD.

My 10-year-old son was diagnosed a few months ago, and we’re really struggling with extreme emotional outbursts that often lead to aggressive and destructive behaviour. It’s having a huge impact on our whole family.

We’re wondering whether ADHD medication could help, but everything I’ve read seems to focus on improving concentration, which isn’t our main issue. We’re much more concerned about his emotional regulation and explosive behaviour.

If your child had similar challenges, did medication help with the emotional side of ADHD? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Thank you.

My older DC is on meds and it has helped with motivation and focus. Younger one is diagnosed but we haven’t started meds. Most of the presentation is anxiety, emotional overwhelm, low self-esteem with some lack of focus and fidgeting.
I have instead worked on understanding her better, her triggers, worries etc, removing pressures (school/social), ensured timely food and rest avoiding getting into a burnt out stage. These have helped enormously in itself. We’ve even decided to change schools from a high pressure to medium pressure school. Meds would be my final step maybe in the teen years if academic pressures demand better focus.

Hi,

my DS has been on meds afew month now and the behaviour and regulation has 100% improved for us.

its very clique to say, but it has been life changing for him and for us as a family.

he’s happier, he knows when he needs to step away from a situation which he would normally impulsively lash out.
he’s on 30mg medikient XL and we seen the change on this dose.
