have been berating ds about his awful spelling, wondering if it is possible to be 13 and undiagnosed if you are really bright and a fluent reader? His father is dyslexic and ds has a dx of AS. Or is it just that he doesnt care as long as he can be understood?

His difficulties include misspelling words he knows, spelling the same word differently in the same sentence, still reversing b & d.

The difficulties you describe are certainly associated with dyslexia. It is possible that he has made it this far without it being noticed- my bright DS was 10 before he was diagnosed, my college graduate DH was 41.
It often runs in families and boys are three times more likely to 'inherit' it. Given your family history and his problems with spelling I would look for an assessment- he may have mild dyslexic tendencies and his intelligence might have been compensating for it.
