DLA renewal: when do payments stop/go down?

5 replies

AuADHD son gets MRC and low rate mobility. I highly expect that’ll reduce with renewal, possibly even stop. If it does, when will payments reduce? I’m getting such mixed messages online, some seem to suggest his initial award is fixed to the date but then others state the new decision has to override the other one so payments will be altered immediately.

Anyone have any direct experience?

@cookiepizzapie

How old is he, OP?

By the time this award ends this year he’ll be 12 years and 9 months, his last award was given for 2 years.

Is it not more likely that the payments will continue as normal, OP, as long as you have returned the renewal form and approval for DLA to continue has been given?

I suspect payments are going to go down because I think he’s just a lot more independent than he was a couple of years ago, I was always a bit shocked by the rate he was given tbh, mobility was an issue because of impulsivity but he’s matured at a faster rate over the last couple of years.

In the very least I expect the mobility element will go. I know it’s about in comparison to his own age group and while he’s certainly less mature than his peers, the difference isn’t as stark now as it was 2 years ago where he seemed very behind.

I should add he’s medicated now so I’m sure that’s helping.

The reason you are seeing mixed messages is because it depends on the individual circumstances, and to an extent which DM’s desk it lands on. Sometimes the award will end on the renewal decision date (although remember it is paid in arrears) and sometimes it will continue until the original award’s end date. There is also a very small chance it is decided you weren’t entitled from an earlier date, e.g. if you hadn’t notified them of a change of circumstances that would affect entitlement.
