Hi all. My son is currently year 11 in a school he hates. He applied for a local college to do a Ready for Adulthood course with Animal Care. It went through normal channels and his PlanCo confirmed on 29th March they had said they could meet need and were subsequently named on his EHCP. We were delighted, as was our son. Since then I have been constantly trying to find out from the college that he is definitely on the course he applied for, days, times etc so that we can apply for transport and sort care for the other days. On Monday the head of school at the college came back to me and said they had decided they can’t meet need and EHCP paperwork has been sent back to LA. I’ve contacted the PlanCo who just says that she has no authority over whether he is accepted on to a course or not and has given us no other info (she hasn’t answered my calls and will only reply to emails). Can anyone tell me where this leaves us? I have an email from the PlanCo from last Thursday literally saying rest assured, my son will be going to this college from September, and now it appears he won’t be. I thought if they were named on the EHCP he would be going there.

If the college is named in section I, they must admit. They can’t refuse. If they try to refuse to admit, they can be forced to admit via JR if necessary. I’m assuming the college isn’t wholly independent, so the LA didn’t need them to agree to being named either.

That isn’t quite the same as being on a specific course, though. Although the provision in F has to be provided and in some cases that means being on certain courses.

Go back to the college on this. Remind them they are named. Escalate this up the chain.

What is their reasoning for suddenly claiming they can’t meet needs?
