PDA and mainstream school

There was a thread on this topic in 2024 but thought I’d start a new one…

My bright 4 year old is starting school in September but I’m spiralling. It’s mainstream but he will likely have a 1:1 (EHCNA stage right now)

He’s great with numbers , knows his times tables and loves maths. But shuts down over holding a pen/writing/colouring.

Hes really excited to start school but obviously he doesn’t realise the demands yet…

Is it possible he will stay in school? Or are we destined to home educate /move to specialist?

It’s hard to say until he starts.

my son is PDA, in year 2 now and thankfully loves it.

reception was pretty rocky not going to lie, but we didn’t get his EHCP until year 1. So I think if he had the hours in reception he would have managed better.
fingers crossed they issue for him.

Some with PDA do remain in mainstream. The right school and right staff can make a huge difference.

I’m afraid lots do end up in SS, with EOTAS/EOTIS or being EHE, though.

Is the LA sticking to the EHCNA timescales?

Have you spoken to the SENCO of the school place allocated via the normal admission round? Is it the same school that is your preference?

I was in this same position last year, my daughter is diagnosed asd with pda. We have a echp with 35 hours on it, they offered her mainstream only and I had many conversations with the school about her needing 1-1 while she was there. They kept saying they don’t do 1-1 in mainstream schools and she wouldn’t get it. We have now been in mainstream for nearly a whole school year, she started on 1.5 hours and now does 2.5 hours a day and has a 1-1 while she’s there. We’ve just done the ehcp review and it’s being put to panel to try and get her into a specialist school, school agree this decision is best too
