Is it worth having an Educational Psychologist assessment to support with the EHCP application.

You don’t need an EP assessment before requesting an EHCNA.

Personally, I wouldn’t wait for an EP assessment. Firstly, anyone good with experience of writing supports for SENDIST, which you need in case you have to appeal, will have a wait, especially at this time of year, and you don’t want to delay making the EHCNA request. Secondly, unless money is no object, I would save your money. If, for example, the LA agree to assess but refuse to issue or issue but you need to appeal the content, you may decide you need to target your money and e.g. focus on an OT &/or SALT assessment with the LA’s EP assessment being satisfactory (not brilliant but will do compared to SALT and OT).
