Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice and experiences from other parents.
My 6-year-old son has recently been diagnosed with ADHD and autism. He’s a lovely, bright boy and very chatty and curious at home, but at school he’s extremely quiet and struggles a lot more.
His teacher has said that he finds it really hard to get started on tasks and stay focused, and often needs quite a bit of support and prompting. If someone sits with him, he can do the work no problem, but without that he can refuse, scribble, or even leave the classroom.
She mentioned that he benefits hugely from having an extra adult in the class (which they currently have in the mornings), and said that if he were her child she would be asking about more consistent 1:1 support.
Socially, he tends to play on his own, especially if his one close friend is off. He’s quite shy and doesn’t really join in with typical playground games like football or chase, and often just wanders or digs by himself. He seems happiest when he’s absorbed in his own interests.
I’m just wondering:
- Has anyone been in a similar situation?
- Did your child get additional support in class, and how did that process work?
- How did things progress over time?
- Is it reasonable to ask about more consistent support at this stage?
I want to support him in the right way without pushing too hard or too soon, but I also don’t want him to struggle unnecessarily.
Any advice or experiences would be really appreciated.
