First EHCP review - any tips?

Year 10 DS has had EHCP for a year.
Things not going well at school and he often rejects support. Negative peer influences in and out of school.
Any advice from you all on how to handle the review meeting is gratefully received. I don’t know what to expect.
I would say the EHCP has not made any difference at all and he stands to fail most GCSEs at this point.

Is that because the provision isn’t adequate or appropriate, or just because he doesn’t want the support?

Would you want to discuss a college course and basic skills courses?

@Buscobel I’m not sure whether it’s a bit of both. I’ve heard that, in smaller settings with good pastoral guidance, kids can do well. I don’t know what the school will say and whether they will claim
not to be able to meet his needs or whether they say they can but he won’t play ball.

It’s a big comprehensive with a large pastoral team. There’s very little comms from them regarding what they do for my son so I have no idea. I just get constant email complaints from teachers; there’s truanting; he refuses to do homework or puts it off and off; he is massively late every day and late to lessons and assigned daily detention (which he also skips, so it gets extended to isolation). I don’t think any of its is functioning well. But maybe that’s how it is with some kids. They then fail school and go to a college that has no entry requirements.

Too often, ARs do not follow the correct process. What should happen is:
Updated advice and information must be circulated at least 2 weeks prior to the AR meeting. This is important for a successful AR.
Then you have the AR meeting.
Within 2 weeks of the AR meeting, a report must be circulated.
Within 4 weeks of the AR meeting, the LA must inform you if they propose to amend or not and if they are, they must send the amendment notice at the same time.
Then if the LA is going to amend, the LA must finalise within a further 8 weeks, so max of 12 weeks from the AR meeting.

Before the meeting, go through the existing EHCP, existing evidence and the updated advice and information circulated looking at where amendments need to be made. Pay particular attention to PfA provision because that is often overlooked by LAs.

From your post, it doesn’t sound like the school is meeting DS’s needs. It is far more likely to be can’t engage rather than won’t and a different approach is needed. The provision detailed, specified and quantified in F of the EHCP should be provided. What is in F? Is it detailed, specified and quantified, or is it vague and woolly? Communication can be included in F, is it? As can things like homework adjustments/support - no homework, reduced homework, adjusted homework, support with homework during school hours or at homework club…

@ExistingonCoffee thank you for your detailed reply. I will need to contact the school and do my homework in advance.
