Showering /bath for child - help please

Hi All

my DS is 9, has ASD.

recently he’s started to refuse to have a bath or shower, I’m now at the point where he will after a massive ammount of cajoling shower once a week.

I’ve tried explaining why it’s important, but he just won’t do it. He gets really upset and cross about it.

Im a single mum & have no adult support to back me up.

does anyone have any resources or tips that can help please?

Can DS explain why he doesn’t want to bathe or shower? For example, is it the sensory feel of the water? Feeling cold getting out? The transition in and out? Smells of the shampoo, etc? Finding it tiring?

Thank you for replying, I’ve unpicked it more with him tonight, it’s because he gets cold as soon as he gets out.

You could try, heating turned up. Towel warmed. If DS will accept your help, your help to help him get dry and dressed ASAP (you can work on independence over time). Pyjamas and dressing gown warmed. Slippers ready. Blanket and hot water bottle or similar. Hairdryer to dry hair if tolerated. Hot drink if he will drink one.
