Sensory school uniform

My 11 yo son, who was diagnosed with ASD and ADHD earlier this year, has always really struggled with clothing. He finds most things too tight or itchy. Currently for primary school he wears bamboo socks, polo top and synthetic sports shorts. He can’t cope with school shorts and especially not school trousers.
Can anyone who has experience of similar recommend school trousers that he might be able to tolerate? He already hates and avoids going to school and I’m worried that the stricter uniform requirements when he starts secondary school will lead to full blown school refusal. When I told him he’ll need to wear trousers he asked if he could be homeschooled. Homeschooling wouldn’t be ideal - when we do homework together he often gets very angry and storms off so I think it would be a real struggle for me to teach him. At school he is high masking and meeting age related expectations.

Have you spoken to the SENCO at the school he will be going to? They will be required to make reasonable adjustments for his sensory needs. The issue at secondary is often not wanting to stand out or look different.
I’d start by looking at specialist sensory ranges and work on desensitisation. Would he tolerate longer bamboo socks to get used to the feel of something on his lower legs. You might even need to find material he can tolerate and have some made.

I can’t help with school trousers that feel similar to synthetic sports shorts, but I know someone boys wear girls’ jersey school trousers (ones you can’t tell are girls’ trousers) because they are softer. Not all boys would want to do that, but it might be worth asking DS about.

Secondary schools still have to make reasonable adjustments to uniform and, assuming it is a state school, they still have to make their best endeavours to meet DS’s SEN.

What is the PE kit at the secondary school DS will most likely be going to like? Would DS be able to wear that?

They aren’t school trousers, but would DS be able to wear tracksuit bottoms made of a similar material to the shorts he wears now and in the same colour as the school’s uniform?
