Dyslexia confusion

Child has struggled with reading and spelling, now age 8 they get an hour of tutoring each week and 1/2 an hour every day with a TA to practice reading and spelling. Dyslexia screener says highly likely to be dyslexic. Is this a high level of support? Or too low?

We are seeing an improvement (still behind for age) but I’m worried school will now take away this support as they are making progress.

I want to apply for an ECH plan but school aren’t keen as they say she is improving with support. Child is about 2-3 years behind in reading, but can now read simple books (blue level?) quite well.

How well does a bog standard 8 year old read?

It sounds like DC needs a full EP assessment and needs more support.

Request an EHCNA yourself. You don’t need the school to agree.

The support she current gets is that a low level or a standard level for a child that’s 2 years behind?

There isn’t a standard amount of support linked to how behind a child is.

I would say DD needs more support than is currently being provided. Don’t compare to what others are receiving or what others need but aren’t receiving. Focus on DD’s needs and what she requires.

Having said that, if the tutoring and TA support are being provided via school, that is more staff time per week than some schools can provide at a school SEN support level. For example, many schools can’t provide the tuition without an EHCP.

We pay for the tutoring but the 2.5 hours a week in school are in her MyPlan.

She is making slow progress with a lot of support, but certainly isn’t working at her age level.

I have a severely dyslexic child now in Y12.
If I could go back to Y2/3, I would do everything possible to get an EHCP in place as everything gets worse in secondary.
