ASD Potty training

Hi all,

Started to train my 4 year old ASD son yesterday. Not a bad first day, he did have 3 wees and 1 poo on the potty, but this was only through me observing him and sitting him on when I could see he needed to go. The rest was done in his pants/ on the floor.

Today now he has started holding his wee. I caught his first wee of the day on the potty and then 5 minutes later he done the rest on my floor as he obviously hadn’t finished and was holding it .

Just want to see if anyone has been through this and they stop holding it eventually? I’ll be honest I’m not 100% sure if he is ready to be trained, he is showing some signs of awareness and is very bright so I wanted to give it a shot during the summer holidays.

Can anyone who’s been through this also advise how long it took for their child to catch on? ie- going to the potty themselves instead of me putting him on there.

thanks in advance

Following as I also having a asd child that’s nearly 5, she is not interested at all in the toilet, wont wearing underwear, holds her wee in different settings, doesn’t tell me if she’s been to the toilet in her pull up, we have had maybe 1 wee on the toilet every 3 months then it’s like the toilet doesn’t exist

Remember those days! Really tricky as there are all sorts of sensory needs to consider and sometimes constipation too. Interoception can play a part too.
Our daughter needed lots of time and patience and sensory considerations. We bought a soft padded toilet training seat, used bubbles to aid constipation ( alongside medication)
They used to think she was trained at Nursery but she would just not go to the toilet and wet herself on the walk home.
Just when we thought we were getting there we went on holiday and she wouldn’t use the toilet there. She was trained in the day just before starting mainstream school and about a year later at night.
This book might help. Good luck.
